Open Water Adventure
February
6-10
Open
Water swimming is very likely the most rewarding form of
swimming, whether you do it for the pure
pleasure of swimming without boundaries, in beautiful
environments and fresh (or salt) water, to explore
bays, lakes, sounds or the open sea, to fully
enjoy vacations to the shore, or to participate
in open water races or triathlons. Open water
swimming can also be a matchless opportunity
to improve your form, by being able to practice
Focal Points for hundreds of uninterrupted strokes
and to adapt your form to different water conditions.
Our Open Water Adventure is designed to teach
you to swim with confidence, safety and great
form in open water. Because the teaching component
of the camp will focus on extending your
pool-developed
skills into open water, you should have already
achieved a reasonable level of mastery of
TI freestyle technique. Prior completion of
a Total Immersion, Inc. Freestyle Weekend Workshop
is
required to participate in this Open Water
camp.
The swimming portions of the camp will include
two kinds of swimming:
Coastal swims:
There
are several protected inlets, and a current
cut (like a natural Endless Pool) near the Island
School. These swims are beautiful, safe and
fun and the ideal place for learning basic open water
skills. We’ll use these settings for development
of open water technique and strategies – including
drafting, navigation, and sighting. These
sessions will be in small groups, with coaches
closely
observing and instructing.
Open Water swims:
These include swims to or from a nearby sandbar,
across a cove, and between offshore islands,
to which we'll travel by boat. Because the Island
School is on a cape we have great flexibility
in choosing swim sites that are protected from
the wind, whichever direction the wind happens
to be blowing that day. These swims are organized
into small groups of complementary ability, and
will be supported by a kayaker
for each 3 to 4
swimmers, plus a power boat patrolling the
course to pick up swimmers wishing to rest and
to supply fluids.
“Dry” programs:
We’ll videotape several times and review
that video in a classroom setting. We’ll
also discuss training for endurance and adapting
your stroke to various open water conditions.
Tuition:
$895
– covers all instruction plus water safety
support. All campers will receive TI t-shirt
and swim cap, Fistgloves and Tempo Trainer.
Meals
and Lodging:
In addition to tuition, your cost for meals and
lodging (in school dormitories, hostel style
accommodations) at the Island School will be
$600 per person for the 5-day duration of our
stay. This will also cover your transportation
between Rock Sound airport and the campus. You
can learn more about the Island School by visiting
http://www.islandschool.org/index.html.
Higher-end lodging is available
at the Luxury Mariner Waterfront, at additional
cost. Those
wishing to consider this option, should call
direct to Stephen Kappeler at 242-422-9977. For
more information the website address is www.capeeleuthera.com.
Travel:
There are a limited number of flights to Rock
Sound airport, the one most convenient to the
Island School, so we recommend you make travel
arrangements early. Our schedule has been planned
to begin the camp after fall semester students
depart from the Island School and dorms and meal
service become available for guests. Should you
wish a longer stay in the Bahamas, you may wish
to fly into Nassau earlier, then fly to Rock
Sound on the first available flight on the 15th
or arrive earlier in Eleuthera Bay and stay at
the Luxury Mariner Waterfront.

best guide to travel options can be found at http://www.islandschool.org/travel.html.
